Gheorghe Zamfir -Dracula Opera

Gheorghe Zamfir Biography

Gheorghe Zamfir (pronounced [ˈge̯orge zamˈfir] in Romanian; born April 6, 1941) is a Romanian pan flute musician who has received 120 golden and platinum disc awards and sold over 40 million albums [1]. He is widely known as "Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute".

Zamfir is known for playing an expanded version of the traditional Romanian-style pan flute (nai) of 20 pipes to 22, 25, 28 and 30 pipes to increase its range, and obtaining as many as nine tones from each pipe by changing the embouchure.

Zamfir came to the public eye when he was "discovered" by Swiss ethnomusicologist Marcel Cellier who extensively researched Romanian folk music in the 1960s. Largely through television commercials where he was billed as "Zamfir, Master of the Pan Flute", he introduced the folk instrument to a modern audience and revived it from obscurity. In the United States his commercials were widely seen on CNN in the 1980s.

Royal Winnipeg Ballet

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet, based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, is Canada's oldest ballet company and the longest continuously operating ballet company in North America.

It was founded in 1939 as the "Winnipeg Ballet Club" by Gweneth Lloyd and Betty Farrally. The name was changed to the "Winnipeg Ballet" in 1941 and the company began touring Canada in 1945. In 1948, with the initiative of the Winnipeg Ballet, the Canadian Ballet Festival was formed.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was granted its royal title in 1953, the first granted under the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. It completed its first American tour in 1954. In June that year the RWB's rented premises were devastated by fire; the company's entire stock of costumes, original music, choreographic scores and sets was destroyed.

Today, the company spends 20 or more weeks a year on the road, presenting more than 100 performances every year in centres large and small. The company also mounts four productions a year in Winnipeg's premier performing arts venue, the Centennial Concert Hall. The company solidified its reputation under the artistic directorship of Arnold Spohr from 1958 to 1988. André Lewis is the current artistic director; he was appointed in 1996.

The dancer most associated with the RWB has been Evelyn Hart. Born in Toronto, Ontario, in 1956, she made her professional debut with the RWB in 1976. In 1980 she was awarded the bronze medal at the World Ballet Concours in Japan, and the gold medal at the prestigious International Competition in Varna, Bulgaria, where she also received the Exceptional Artistic Achievement Award. She was awarded the Order of Canada in 1983. She left the RWB in 2005.

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet School, Professional Division is an exclusive, full-time classical ballet training program for students in grades 6 through 12. The school includes approximately 70 young dancers, selected from around the world, and graduates have international careers in top companies in Canada and abroad. The current building opened in January, 1988.

In 2002, The Royal Winnipeg Ballet's interpretation of the story of Dracula, choreographed by Mark Godden, was filmed in a made for television titled Dracula: Pages from a Virgin's Diary directed by Guy Maddin. The film eventually was released theatrically.

DRACULA BALLET IS DEAD SEXY

Smart, seductive and dead sexy, Dracula is a journey into the darkest places of the soul. The theme
of being torn between the prim and uptight sexual norms of Victorian society is starkly contrasted
with the forbidden and decadent biddings of the underworld. With the neck bite serving as a
metaphor for sexual awakening, the opening scene’s dance is symbolic of the struggle between a
waning good-girl’s self and the emergence of a hungry inner vampire. This theme is interwoven
throughout the ballet.
The production’s tricks are clever, complete with flying bats, dancing gargoyles, mysterious
transformations, decapitation and impaling. With set & costume design by Paul Daigle and lighting
design by David Morrison, every change of place is discernible with a defining mood and
atmosphere; and an ambience only heightened by Gustav Mahler’s haunting score. Principal
dancers Tara Birtwhistle, Vanessa Lawson and Jaime Vargas perform the lead roles in the
production.
In programming the ballet as part of the danceAlive! season, Ballet British Columbia’s Artistic
Director, John Alleyne has this to say: “The haunting and otherworldly Dracula is a sumptuous,
erotically charged gothic ballet that transports the audience with its expressionistic, avant-garde
images and seductive choreography.”
About the production, CBC Radio critic Robert Enright has said, “I’m utterly seduced…brilliantly
conceived…there’s sensuality in Godden’s dance that I find absolutely startling.” Pamela
Anthony, from The Edmonton Journal, wrote, “Mark Godden’s Dracula is a ballet that will live on.
Dance that swirls in dark shadows infused with sexuality, and lifted by unexpected humour: This
is Gothic ballet at its most appealing. From opening prologue to final scene, there is rumour of
longevity to the production, a hint of the magic that makes the myths of Dracula so immortal.”
The RWB’s version of Dracula seduced Winnipeg film director Guy Maddin into making it into a
movie which received international acclaim. The film earned Maddin an International Emmy for
Best Arts Programming, two Junos, the grand prize at Sitges International Festival in Spain and a
Gemini nomination for Principal Dancer Tara Birtwhistle.
